Three months after its establishment, the Ivorian government is accelerating reforms aimed at improving market supply and modernizing commercial infrastructure. As part of this initiative, Minister Kalil Konaté conducted a field visit to several markets in Abidjan on April 23, 2026, to identify concrete solutions.
This tour is part of the implementation of the decree concerning the responsibilities of government members. “All the actions we are taking fall within this framework, which requires us to promote, regulate, and modernize trade, both domestic and international,” stated Mr. Konaté.
Following an analysis of past achievements based on his predecessor’s documentation, the Minister began field visits, notably to the OCPV (Office of Public Procurement of Guinea) in Abobo on April 22nd. This key structure for supplying markets was where he identified significant constraints, particularly regarding land ownership.
“Of the 72.19 hectares allocated since 1984, only 12.5 hectares are currently being cultivated. With the support of the highest authorities, we will work to reclaim the remaining 59 hectares,” he stated, specifying that the objective is to develop a large, modern market there to supply the entire Greater Abidjan area.
During his visit, the Minister commended the quality of certain infrastructure, particularly the Habitat Soumahoro Farikou market in Adjamé, built on approximately 2.4 hectares. He announced the upcoming submission to the government of a roadmap resulting from the national market forum and completed audits, emphasizing modernization, congestion management, and the provision of equipment for market spaces.
Addressing the concerns of traders, particularly regarding the transportation of goods, Mr. Konaté mentioned integrated projects aimed at developing national transportation solutions. “We are working to foster national leaders in the sector to facilitate market supply,” he stated, while encouraging traders to register for their professional licenses. The Member of Parliament and Mayor of Adjamé, Soumahoro Farikou, for his part, welcomed this initiative, believing it will allow for a better understanding of the realities faced by traders and improve their working conditions.
