The Professional Association of Banks and Financial Institutions of Côte d’Ivoire is a professional association whose members are banks and other financial institutions. It is governed primarily by the following texts:
- Law No. 60-315 of 21 September 1960 on Associations;
- Law No. 90-589 of 25 July 1990 on banking regulations, amended by Law No. 95-495 of 26 June 1995;
- Article 55 of Order No. 2009-385 of 1 December 2009.
Like any association, the Professional Association of Banks and Financial Institutions of Côte d’Ivoire (APBEF-CI) primarily fulfills its mission of defending the interests of its members within the framework of promoting and developing banking and financial activities. Its purpose is to foster and maintain regular and beneficial relationships among its members, enabling them to present a united front and speak with one voice in defending and developing banking and financial activities within Côte d’Ivoire’s liberal economy. In this regard, it ensures:
The standardization of the rules governing its members and the practices they follow;
Contribution to the development of savings and the prosperity of commerce, industry, and agriculture by submitting suggestions related to its general interests to the Government, the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO), the Chambers of Commerce, and other professional organizations; and intervention, acting as an amicable arbitrator or rapporteur, in disputes that may be brought before it.
Legal intervention, if necessary, in any situation where a bank or financial institution is involved, whether as plaintiff or defendant, when the proceedings affect the general interests of the profession;
Monitoring and sharing of information on the solvency and ethical conduct of businesses in general;
Intervention in cases provided for by laws or regulations. In particular, the APBEF-CI studies issues relevant to the practice of banking and related professions: conditions, consolidation, creation of shared services, and professional training.
The Professional Association of Banks and Financial Institutions of Côte d’Ivoire (APBEF-CI) facilitates agreements on these issues and may be tasked by the competent authorities with the effective management of joint bodies that banks and/or financial institutions may establish. It may also be called upon by the competent authorities to issue opinions regarding the practice of the profession or concerning one of its members.
